Comparing Editorial Comment

We have been looking at the ways in which the use of media language by news producers incorporates viewpoints and ideologies. Using your notes about the Editorial Comment pieces in The Daily Mail and The Guardian, you need to outline the similarities and differences and include an image of your chosen examples. Consider how the Uses and Gratifications Theory may also be used to analyse the two pages you have used for this task. Use these questions to help you consider what needs the newspaper products are satisfying in their audience.
  1. Consider why people return to the same newspaper title repeatedly and feel that it represents their own views that they can identify with. How is this particularly obvious with the comment page.
  2. Which paper might satisfy the audience's need for entertainment the most? What kind of escapism does it offer readers and which articles provide the most entertainment.
  3. Reading newspapers is informative because it explores current affairs and culture, but which paper is best for providing this level of education?
  4. How might news and feature articles along with comment pieces spark social interactions for people?
