Newspaper Contexts - Social Contexts

Social contexts from Mrs Downie

How news producers target, attract, reach, address and potentially construct audiences through content and marketing.

In class, you have completed detailed analysis of front pages of the Daily Mail and the Guardian plus examples of Twitter, Facebook and Instagram posts in terms of how they target and address audiences. You need an overview of the different target audiences and audience address of the full range of newspapers (and associated social media) because it might be used for unseen analysis in the examination.

Task: You need to have an overview of the different sections of the Guardian and Daily Mail print editions in terms of how they target and address different audiences. We looked at these newspapers again in class this week. Look at the following sections of your own copies of The Daily Mail and The Guardian and make revision notes about how they appeal to the target audience. Remember: you need this overview to give you an understanding of how the newspaper is constructed and so you can support your ideas with evidence about the two newspapers in your examination answers. It is not essential that you have deconstructed an example of all of these different sections, as they appear on different days and you may only have a newspaper which includes one example.
